the second of three sons of Renaud de Craon and Enoguen De Vitr\u00e9. Maurice \u2013 Robert and Guy de Craon. He settled in Aquitaine and was betrothed to the daughter of the lord of Angoumois. Am\u00e9lie De Chabanais.   <\/p><p>He gave up his fianc\u00e9e and traveled to Palestine after learning that Hugues de Payns (Hugh of Payens) had founded the Templar Order.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c7785a5 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"c7785a5\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1f33cbc e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"1f33cbc\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-aad6537 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"aad6537\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>His courage and piety earned him the appointment of Grand Master on the death of Hugues de Payens in 1136. Shortly after his election, he and his troops defeated the emir of Aleppo, who was engaged in brigandage activities throughout Palestine. <\/p><p>Under Robert&#8217;s magisterium, the Knights Templar were authorized by Pope Eugenius III to wear the Red Cross patt\u00e9e. Pope Innocent II, she says: &#8220;Omne datum optimum (March 29, 1139) specifies the privileges of the Order&#8221; <\/p><p> <\/p><p>The most important is the exemption from episcopal jurisdiction; the Order will be able to have its own priests, its chaplains will not report to the bishops.<\/p><p>To this is added the exemption from tithes;
