The king sought to gather an elite group of knights around him. The order remained relatively small, with around one hundred knights. Their motto was: Monstrant regibus astra viam \u2014 The stars show kings the way.   <br><br>It sounded grand.<br>Honourable.<br>Almost exalted.<br><br>But what was missing was that which an order truly rests upon. The knights of the Star swore an oath never to flee in battle.<br>An oath without nuance \u2014 without a deeper, sustaining rule.<br>When they faced the enemy at the Battle of Poitiers in 1356, they kept their word.<br>They stood.<br>And they fell.  <br><br>The order was struck hard there and lost much of its strength. After that battle, it effectively collapsed and was never truly restored. Not through lack of courage\u2026 but through the absence of a solid foundation. We see: the Duke of Lancaster, the Duke of Brittany, fighting in Normandy, many dead (\u201cfurent occis\u201d), and the negotiations that followed.
