Ponferrada es la \u00faltima localidad m\u00e1s grande en la ruta de peregrinaci\u00f3n hacia Santiago de Compostela. En \u00e9poca romana, se extra\u00eda oro en las cercan\u00edas de Ponferrada, v\u00e9ase Las M\u00e9dulas. En la Edad Media, Ponferrada fue durante un breve periodo la sede espa\u00f1ola de los Caballeros Templarios, que pose\u00edan un gran castillo en la ciudad.
