c\u00e1taros (del griego: \u03ba\u03b1\u03b8\u03b1\u03c1\u03bf\u03af, katharoi, \u00ablos puros\u00bb) o albigenses fueron un movimiento religioso que disfrut\u00f3 de un gran seguimiento en el oeste de Languedoc durante los siglos XII y XIII. Se inspiraron en la vida de Jesucristo tal como se describe en la Biblia, pero su interpretaci\u00f3n m\u00edstica, simb\u00f3lica y dualista de las historias b\u00edblicas difer\u00eda mucho de la Iglesia Cat\u00f3lica Romana. Seg\u00fan los c\u00e1taros, Satan\u00e1s era todopoderoso en la tierra y solo la inspiraci\u00f3n espiritual del Esp\u00edritu Santo conduc\u00eda a la salvaci\u00f3n.  <\/p><p>Para los gobernantes de la Iglesia Cat\u00f3lica, esto era herej\u00eda, una desviaci\u00f3n inadmisible de lo que consideraban doctrina correcta, que literalmente deb\u00eda combatirse con fuego y espada. La iglesia organiz\u00f3 y financi\u00f3 intensas expediciones militares a la zona, las Cruzadas Albigenses, y puso fin violentamente al catarismo. La Inquisici\u00f3n, organizada por la iglesia, continu\u00f3 las persecuciones hasta que ya no hubo c\u00e1taros.
