Cathares (du grec : \u03ba\u03b1\u03b8\u03b1\u03c1\u03bf\u03af, katharoi, \u00ab les purs \u00bb) ou Albigeois \u00e9taient un mouvement religieux qui b\u00e9n\u00e9ficiait d\u2019un large public dans l\u2019ouest du Languedoc aux XIIe et XIIIe si\u00e8cles. Ils \u00e9taient inspir\u00e9s par la vie de J\u00e9sus-Christ telle que d\u00e9crite dans la Bible, mais leur interpr\u00e9tation mystique, symbolique et dualiste des r\u00e9cits bibliques diff\u00e9rait grandement de celle de l\u2019\u00c9glise catholique romaine. Selon les Cathares, Satan \u00e9tait tout-puissant sur terre et seule l\u2019inspiration spirituelle du Saint-Esprit menait au salut.  <\/p><p>Pour les dirigeants de l\u2019\u00c9glise catholique, il s\u2019agissait d\u2019une h\u00e9r\u00e9sie, une d\u00e9viation inacceptable de ce qu\u2019ils consid\u00e9raient comme la doctrine correcte, qui devait litt\u00e9ralement \u00eatre combattue par le feu et l\u2019\u00e9p\u00e9e. L\u2019\u00e9glise organisa et finan\u00e7a de lourdes exp\u00e9ditions militaires dans la r\u00e9gion, les croisades albigeoises, et mit violemment fin au catharisme. L\u2019Inquisition, organis\u00e9e par l\u2019\u00c9glise, poursuivit les pers\u00e9cutions jusqu\u2019\u00e0 ce qu\u2019il n\u2019y ait plus de cathares.
